Real-time electricity pricing to balance green energy intermittency

چکیده
The presence of consumers able to respond changes in wholesale electricity prices facilitates the penetration renewable intermittent sources energy such as wind or sun power. We investigate how adapting demand supply by making price-responsive - thanks smart meters and home automation appliances impacts mix. show that it almost always reduces carbon emissions. Furthermore, when are not too risk-averse, response is socially beneficial because loss from exposing volatile more than offset lower production environmental costs. However, gain decreasing proportion reactive increases. Therefore, depending on costs necessary hardware, may be non-optimal equip whole population.

Rethinking Real-Time Electricity Pricing
Most US consumers are charged a near-constant retail price for electricity, despite substantial hourly variation in the wholesale market price. This paper evaluates the rst program to expose residential consumers to hourly real-time pricing (RTP). I nd that enrolled households are statistically signi cantly price elastic and that consumers responded by conserving energy during peak hours, but...
متن کاملOptimising Electricity Real Time Pricing Tariffs
Electricity Real Time Pricing (RTP) tariffs inter alia have Demand Side Management (DSM) as a main aim. Customers are billed according to hourly fluctuating energy prices. Essentially RTP pricing signals can be seen as control inputs to change customer load usage. It is suggested that optimised pricing signals sent to RTP customers can lead to a much more efficient DSM initiative. This paper de...

Most US consumers are charged a near-constant retail price for electricity, despite substantial hourly variation in the wholesale market price. This paper evaluates a randomized experiment that exposed households to hourly real time pricing (RTP) and applies the demand estimates to counterfactual simulations in a structural model of the Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland electricity market. The model...
متن کاملCSEM WP 136R Is Real-Time Pricing Green?: The Environmental Impacts of Electricity Demand Variance
Real-time pricing (RTP) of electricity would improve allocative efficiency and limit wholesalers’ market power. Conventional wisdom claims that RTP provides additional environmental benefits. This paper argues that RTP will reduce the variance, both withinand across-days, in the quantity of electricity demanded. We estimate the short-run impacts of this reduction on SO2, NOx, and CO2 emissions....
متن کاملCSEM WP 136 Is Real-Time Pricing Green?: The Environmental Impacts of Electricity Demand Variance
Economists have long advocated for electricity pricing that accurately reflects time-varying production costs. In particular, real-time pricing (RTP) would improve the efficiency of electricity consumption and investment and would lessen the potential harm from market power. Conventional wisdom has claimed that RTP has an additional benefit, namely, reduced emissions from reduced peak demand. W...
